How Maybe* is delivering is delivering Borrow* in Bradford: A Green solution to single-use packaging sponsored by Starbucks 💚

We are delighted to share how Maybe* is helping tackle single-use plastic.

In the bustling city of Bradford, a new initiative called Borrow* is making waves in the fight against single-use packaging. With a staggering 58 million items of food and drink sold in disposable packaging in the UK every week, it's high time for innovative solutions to address this environmental challenge.

Borrow* is a simple yet impactful scheme designed to reduce the reliance on single-use cups and takeaway packaging by encouraging reuse. It is funded by the Starbucks Bring it Back Fund via a program run by Hubbub and managed by Green Street.

How the Borrow* program works

Borrow* operates on a straightforward premise – customers borrow cups and takeaway packaging from participating cafes for a small deposit, use them, and then return the items to swap for a new Borrow* cup or box or to return to get their deposit back. The borrowed items are subsequently washed and made ready for reuse, creating a continuous cycle that significantly reduces the demand for single-use packaging. To incentivise customers, Borrow* offers discounts on drinks and a chance to win prizes in their monthly draw.

The process

Borrowing: Customers can easily Borrow* cups and food boxes from cafes and takeaways across Bradford and its surrounding areas, for a small deposit. This not only eliminates the need for disposable items but also promotes a sense of community and shared responsibility.

Returning: After enjoying their drinks or meals, customers are encouraged to return the borrowed items to swap for a new Borrow* cup or food box or to return to get their deposit back. This simple act contributes to reducing waste and lessening the environmental impact of single-use packaging.

Rewards and Recognition: Borrow* sweetens the deal for customers by providing discounts on their drinks and the opportunity to participate in a monthly prize draw. By scanning the QR code on the packaging and logging their reuse, customers enter the draw for a chance to win a coveted prize – a free hot drink every week for a year.

How it works: Maybe* delivers all of these automations via its platform. Maybe* CEO says “Borrow* has used Maybe* to seamlessly integrate technology into the borrowing process. Maybe* has designed a process for logging the reuse of the Borrow* cup or box without the need to download an App. It allows the customer to scan the QR code on the packaging to log their reuse via WhatsApp or Messenger, streamlining the experience and making it convenient for residents and visitors alike to participate in this eco-friendly initiative. It’s great to imagine that this can have. We are delighted to see our technology being used in this way and look forward to supporting this project as it grows”.

Customers logging their reuse can see collectively how much single-use packaging they have prevented from being thrown away as well as collectively as a community the bigger impact on the environment.

The Borrow* initiative is a crucial step toward addressing the alarming volumes of single-use packaging that often end up in landfills or polluting the environment. By fostering a culture of reuse, Borrow* significantly minimises the carbon footprint associated with disposable items and contributes to a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.

Borrow* in Bradford is not just a scheme; it's a movement toward a greener, more sustainable future.
